This morning, Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the hardest thing she’d have to do. This afternoon, her planet was invaded.
The year is 2575, and two rival megacorporations are at war over a planet that’s little more than an ice-covered speck at the edge of the universe. Too bad nobody thought to warn the people living on it. With enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra—who are barely even talking to each other—are forced to fight their way onto an evacuating fleet, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.
But their problems are just getting started. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their enemy; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady hacks into a tangled web of data to find the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: the ex-boyfriend she swore she’d never speak to again.
Everyone told me that I would be broken by this book so what did I go and do? I read it. Of course, I did!
What I absolutely adored about this book was the format. It isn’t written like your average book with chapters or different POVs. It is a file of some sort, made up of chat logs, surveillance footage, emails, military files etc. This made it so quick to read and addictive because you feel like you’re reading something you shouldn’t be.
Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff are masters at playing with your emotions. They know how to twist the story to shock and hurt you but also how to make you laugh in the face of it all.
We start off with our main characters Kady and Ezra, thinking that the worst thing in the world right now is that they’re about to break up…and then their planet gets attacked. DUN, DUN, DUNNN! And so all hell lets loose in their small part of the universe.
I won’t talk about AIDAN. I don’t think I can bring myself to without giving away a huge chunk of the story.
The Illuminae Files, Illuminae, Gemina and Obsidio, are all about telling the truth of what happened during the Kerenza IV attack and other events to come in the later books. You will be hooked from the start.
This book will rip out your heart and hand it to you. No joke.
