My name is Stacey Woods and I was raped.Stacey is the victim of a terrible sexual attack. She does not feel able to go to the police, or talk about it to anybody other than her best friend, Patrice. Patrice, outraged, when she cannot persuade her to go to the police, encourages Stacey to write everything down. This is Stacey’s story.A tautly told and important book, perfect for readers of Asking for It by Louise O’Neill.
Here was my initial review on goodreads:
Firstly, this book is an important read and one that I think everyone should read just simply for awareness. It is centred around the rape of school girl Stacey Woods. We read about the aftermath first and how Stacey feels and how she processes what has happened to her. Then we read about what happened before she was raped and learn the details about the disgusting crime.
It can be quite a hard book to read as there are some creepy and seedy parts, obviously. I don’t want to spoil the book so I won’t go into too much detail but the whole situation is strange and like it’s unbelievable. Even though the situation is fictional, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t actually happen, which is frightening.
One negative that I want to bring up is that I feel like Stacey is quite naive but I suppose that may be why she was targeted for such an awful crime. She has been noticed as naive or vulnerable and in turn that is why her attacker chose her. Preying on an innocent girl and taking advantage of her trust. EW.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for its serious topic and sensitive handling of the subject of rape. Also, I imagine this would be a great help to anyone out there going through this situation.
